Voice & business
I Took Down Our Blog. On Purpose.

I own a business that helps other businesses tell their stories.
And a few weeks ago, I decided the best thing I could do for our own marketing was delete our blog.
Yep. The guy who talks about visibility, search results, telling your story, and building an online presence decided to take content off his own website.
Why?
Because it was garbage.
Not grammatically. Not technically. It probably checked every little SEO box someone on the internet said mattered.
But it didn't sound like me. It didn't sound like us. And it sure as hell didn't communicate why I love doing this work.
Somewhere between trying to be efficient and trying to be visible, I'd lost the very thing I tell clients never to lose.
Their voice.
And here's the uncomfortable part.
Some of you have done the exact same thing. You just haven't deleted your blog, or maybe you have and I just can't find it.
Maybe you're still here reading because you know that little voice in the back of your head. The one that tells you something doesn't feel quite right anymore.
The website doesn't sound like you. The marketing feels forced. The message that used to come so naturally feels like it's been run through six committees and a corporate buzzword generator.
Somewhere along the way, through growth, expansion, new opportunities, or maybe just the chaos of keeping a business alive, something changed.
You started losing the voice, the tone, the essence of the business you were so damn excited to build in the first place.
Been there. Done that.
And guess what?
Finding your way back isn't always easy.
Because talking about yourself is hard. Talking about your business is hard. And for a whole lot of really talented people, being proud of what you've built somehow feels dangerously close to bragging.
So instead, we play it safe.
We talk about our services. Our years of experience. Our commitment to customer satisfaction. Our innovative solutions.
We make ourselves sound like everybody else because we're afraid to sound too much like ourselves.
And that's a shame.
Because I've had enough conversations with business owners, nonprofit leaders, founders, and people doing some absolutely incredible things to know something.
The best part of your business probably isn't on your website.
It's in the conversation where you start talking about why you got started.
It's in the frustration you felt when you realized there had to be a better way to do something.
It's in the people you've helped, the problems you've solved, the risks you've taken, and those moments when you sit back and think, Holy crap. We actually built this.
That's the stuff.
That's what makes people lean in. That's what makes someone trust you before they've even met you.
And for whatever reason, that's the stuff we keep editing out of our marketing.
We polish away the personality. We bury the passion under professional language. We get so caught up in describing what we do that we forget to tell people why it matters.
I'm guilty of it, too. Hence the missing blog.
But I'm also done pretending there's some magical formula for making people care about a business.
There isn't.
There's good work. There are good people. There are stories worth telling. And there's the willingness to get your humble ass out of the way and actually share them.
That's where things get exciting for me.
I love getting into conversations with people about what they've built. The big dreams, the little frustrations, the ideas that have been bouncing around in their heads for years.
I love hearing someone explain what makes their business special, even when they don't realize they're doing it.
And I love connecting all those little pieces into something that finally feels right.
Sometimes that's a brand that needs a little more personality. Sometimes it's a website that actually captures the business behind it. Sometimes it's sharpening the message, building a better online presence, or finding new ways to reach the people who need what you do.
And sometimes it's just having somebody on the other side of the table look at you and say, "You know you're really freaking good at this, right?"
Because you probably are.
You might just need some help telling the world.
That's what we're building at Connection Built. Not another marketing agency armed with templates, buzzwords, and promises of becoming the next big thing.
A place where good ideas get heard, great stories get told, and businesses get the attention they deserve.
We can help tell your story, share your vision, sharpen your marketing, and bring some life back to the business you've worked so hard to build.
And the best part?
Getting started is easy.
Conversations are free. Coffee is cheap.
And I absolutely love hearing what you're building.
